Abstract

The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of extraction of impacted lower third molar teeth among people of Ladakhi origin in the high altitude region of Leh.

The study population were people exclusively of ladakhi origin who were affected with impacted lower third molar teeth. The sample included patients in the age group of 20–50 years. The study represents a retrospective analysis of panoramic and intraoral periapical radiographs of patients visiting a govt. multispecialty dental centre from May 2021 to Nov2021.

Out of 126 patients, 57.2% male patients underwent extraction of mandibular molars as compared to 42.8% female patients and mesioangular impaction was the most common type and the transverse type was the least common type of impaction.

The study demonstrated that males (57.2%) presented and underwent extraction of impacted lower third molars more than the females (42.8%). The prevalence of lower third molar impactions was almost the same on both left (51.6%) and right(48.4%) sides. However, mesioangular impaction was the commonest type.
