Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extraction vs non- extraction dilemma using lateral cephalogram parameters like Williams line, Ricketts E line, IMPA, interincisal angle, U1-NA linear values and their correlations, if any, to analyse if definite extraction decision for postive post- treatment results can be attained.

To establish if soft tissue parameter Rickett's E-line in relation to upper lip and lower lip and hard tissue parameter William's diagnostic line can give a positive conclusion in determining extraction versus non - extraction treatment plan.

50 lateral cephalograms were maually traced and the necessary parameters were tabulated and then compared for each cephalogram.

There was a definitive conclusion attained using two parameters during planning extraction.

Cephalometric parameters can be used as reliable diagnostic aids to help clinicians avoid faulty treatment plans and unnecessary extractions to ultimately preserve the soft tissue drape and overall esthetics of the patients post- orthodontic treatment.
