This single blind, randomized clinical trial compared the post operative sensitivity in the non carious cervical lesions restored with nanoceramic composite resins using universal adhesive systems in self etch and selective etch modes.
Non carious cervical lesions in 60 mandibular premolars were randomly divided into two groups. The restorations were bonded with Universal adhesive systems using self etch in one group and selective enamel etching mode in another group. The composite resin Ceram.X Sphere TEC was placed in incremental technique. Post operative sensitivity was measured as reported by patients, on air blast test and cold water test with VAS scale after 24 hours, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months.
The selective enamel etch mode with Universal adhesive systems exhibited less post operative sensitivity with all the tests at all the time intervals. On statistical comparison there was no significant difference present between the two groups after 24 hours (p>0.05). However after 6 months, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (p<0.05).
Minimum postoperative sensitivity was observed in teeth restored with nanoceramic composite resin with selective enamel etching in the immediate post operative period. After 6 months, teeth restored with nanoceramic composite with selective enamel etching showed significantly less post operative sensitivity than the teeth restored without etching.
