Abstract

The target of this study is to emphasize on correct facial positioning for pre-treatment pictures and demonstrate a some of the unnoticeable errors in clinical photography which can alter the diagnosing and treatment designing.

This study includes sixty patients of age group 14-35 years seeking treatment for whom 3 sets (where the primary set of photograph carries withit 2 photos) of pre- treatment profile pictures were taken in Natural Head Position as determined by the patient's visual axis. The second set of an equivalent patient were clicked by tilting the chin upwards roughly (between +6 to +16°) and third set was taken by tilting the chin downward roughly (between -6 to -16 °). All the sets of pictures were manually copied for a few angular and linear measurements and results were compared and statistically analyzed to seek out the significance.

On comparison of the means using independent student t test, the distinction between the correct and error means that of the chin throat angle and the angle of facial convexity was solely found to be significant.

The Chin Throat Angle analysis is important for the orthodontist's awareness of treatment designing and might even be used for explaining to the patient. The angles of convexity best suited for discrimination between skeletal classes. The incorrect head posture may end up in confusion relating to the patient's actual skeletal pattern and soft tissue drape. Therefore, not solely frontal photographs however conjointly profile photographs plays an vital role in diagnostic purposes.
