This systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, verify the literature available, and ultimately summarize the various applications and outcomes of ozone therapy in the field of dentistry.
Systematic review following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines.
An electronic search was performed in the databases i.e. Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and the database OpenGrey was used to search the “gray literature”. Apart from this, a hand search was also conducted. The search strategy included articles in the English language using keywords i.e. “Applications”, “Ozone”, “Ozone therapy”, “Dentistry”, “Teeth”, “Tooth”, “Enamel”, and “Mouth”, published between January 2000 and October 2022. Two independent reviewers evaluated the quality of the studies. A third investigator was consulted for mutual consensus.
Qualitative analysis.
A total of 37 articles were included; 8 articles were given a low risk of bias rating, 17 articles were given an uncertain risk of bias rating, and 12 articles were given a high-risk rating. The majority of the articles that were dispelled produced results in the most varied areas of dentistry, and ozone has generally broad applicability. However, the large number of articles that were classified as having a high risk of bias or an uncertain risk may have limited the amount of evidence that was discovered.
While laboratory studies suggest a promising potential of ozone in dentistry, this has not been fully realized in clinical studies to date. To assess the potential use of ozone as a therapeutic modality in dentistry, more rigorously defined methods of measurement and analyses, well-designed double-blind randomized clinical trials, with sufficient sample size, and little or no loss to follow-up, are required.
