Healing of dental extraction sockets in insulin-dependent diabetic patients

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to ascertain if individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes and non-diabetic patients experienced delays in healing after tooth extractions.

The prospective observational study was done on 112patients who were referred for extractions throughout the 15-month period, from March 2021 to June 2022.

The study comprised 112 diabetes patients who were insulin-dependent. 52 men and 60 women were present. Only 48 of these 112 individuals had a single tooth extracted, 32 of which were molars. 36 patients had two to three teeth removed. 14 patients had four to six teeth removed. Twelve individuals had six to ten teeth removed. 23 teeth had to be taken from two patients, who were held overnight for observation. The average age was 50 years.

The study demonstrates that Type 1 and insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetic patients tend to heal up well after dental extractions if their condition is properly controlled, however there is a little but not statistically significant difference in the rate of post extraction problems, including infection. This goes against what is typically taught. In contrast to non-insulin dependent diabetics or non-diabetic individuals, clinicians should exercise extreme caution when managing insulin-dependent diabetic patients.
