The value of Z -angle has been of considerable concern when planning orthodontic treatment, as it has been recognized as one of the important diagnostic keys.
A total of 104 patients with all permanent dentition present in the mouth, who reported to the Department of Orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedics BCDS Bhopal, were clinically examined and their lateral cephelogram were obtained and analyzed with the help of Dental Studio® NX 2006 pnemoceph software for the Tweed Merrifield Cephelometric analysis.
Z-angle and Frankfort mandibular incisor plane angle (FMIA) decreased significantly (p< 0.000) with the increase of the skeletal vertical dimension. Incisor mandibular plane angle (IMPA) was significantly higher (p< 0.000) in low-angle patients compared to the high-angle ones. Z-angle appeared to be the most accurate parameter to signify hard and soft tissue convexity.
The Z-angle and FMIA angle are the parameters which most accurately describe the patients with convex profiles. We found a strong positive correlation between the Z-angle and the FMIA angle.
