There is a close symbiotic relationship between periodontal health and teeth restorations as a healthy periodontium that is in harmony with the restorative margins is vital for a successful restoration. The prevention of violation of the biological width is an inevitable aspect for the success of fixed partial dentures and crowns. During treatment planning it is important to recognize different gingival biotypes and forms, because they can affect the esthetic outcome of the treatment. This review provides an insight into the different gingival biotypes, their response to inflammation and trauma; corresponding margin placement, gingival retraction and its types and significance in different prosthodontic modalities like esthetic rehabilitation and fixed restorative therapy.
