A comparative analysis of tensile bond strength: Glass ionomer cements vs. composite resins in dental applications

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to assess and compare the tensile bond strength between Glass Ionomer Cements (GIC) and Composite Resins.

In this study, 50 extracted central incisors were collected, cleaned, dried, and stored in normal saline to preserve their condition. Impressions were made after cavity preparation, and dental stone molds were created, involving the formation of wax patterns followed by de-waxing, finishing, and polishing of the castings. The specimens were then randomly assigned to two groups: Group A, which was treated with glass ionomer cements (GIC), and Group B, which received composite resins. The tensile bond strength of each specimen was measured using a Universal Testing Machine. The data were recorded in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using SPSS software, with statistical significance determined by Student's t-test.

The study results show that the tensile bond strength of Group A (Glass Ionomer Cement) was 2.22 with a standard deviation of 0.27, while Group B (Composite Resins) had a mean tensile strength of 2.82 and a standard deviation of 0.31. The p-value of 0.0006 indicates that the difference in tensile bond strength between the two groups is statistically significant.

Composite resins demonstrate superior tensile bond strength compared to Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) and its variants, making them a more favorable choice for dental restorations.
