Abstract

Ni-Ti rotary files have the advantages of extreme flexibility and shape memory for the management of curved root canals but there is also a substantial risk of separation with Ni-Ti instruments which is due to cyclic fatigue hence this study has been undertaken to compare and evaluate effect of sterilization and canal curvature on cyclic fatigue resistance of different rotary NiTi file systems.

In this study cyclic fatigue resistance of 40 NiTi rotary files manufactured by Indian campanies of tip size 25-04% were tested: Group1 (n=20) Healix conmem M3 gold and Group 2 (n=20) Neoendo flex rotary files. Both groups were divided depending on sterilization cycles and further subdivided depending on different canal curvatures they were subjected to. Files of each group were allowed to rotate in custom fabricated stainless steel block containing artificial canal of different canal curvatures with endomotor until frature occurs. Time of fracture was recorded in seconds and cyclic fatigue resistance was calculated.

Within the limitation of the study Neoendo Flex rotary files exhibited greater resistance to cyclic fatigue than Healix conmem M3 Gold files at both 45° and 60° canal curvature with more cyclic fatigue resistance at 60° as campared to 45° canal curvature (P<0.05). After 5 cycle of sterilization also, Neoendo flex file exhibited more resistance to cyclic fatigue as compared to Healix Conmem M3 Gold.

Neoendo flex files have greater cyclic fatigue resistance at different curvatures and after sterilization cycles than Healix M3 conmem Gold.
