An examination of 38 patients at a tertiary care hospital in northern India retrospectively unveiled the characteristics of fractures occurring at the symphysis and parasymphysis regions: An original research

Abstract

Maxillofacial fractures, often a consequence of traumatic events, pose unique challenges in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. The symphysis and parasymphysis regions, being pivotal components of the mandible, warrant careful examination due to their crucial roles in facial aesthetics and functional integrity. This research seeks to unravel the distinctive characteristics associated with fractures in these regions, shedding light on patterns, etiological factors, and clinical outcomes.

A retrospective investigation of 38 subjects with maxillofacial injuries was conducted at tertiary care hospital located in Rajasthan. Data spanning from April 2021 to May 2023 were collected by retrieving and reviewing the records of all patients who received treatment during this period. The information was systematically documented on an Excel spreadsheet, encompassing variables such as age, gender, cause of injury, nature of injury, and any associated injuries (such as head injury, ophthalmic injury, or abdominal injury). In this study, the mandible was categorized into specific regions, including dentoalveolar, symphysis, body, angle, ramus, condyle, and coronoid process. Treatment done were open reduction and internal fixation for symphysis and parasymphysis fractures using Titanium and stainless steel plates and screws under LA or GA. Data were tabulated and analyzed statistically.

A total of 38 subjects had mandibular fractures, out of which male to female ratio was 7: 1. 26 patients were suffered from road traffic accidents and 6 were from the animal attacks, 6 patients had head injury. Parasymphysis fracture was seen in 23 patients ( 63.88%) and symphysis fracture was seen in 13 patients which is around 41.66%.

Mandibular fractures can be complicated and demanding, and have a compelling impact on patients’ quality of life. Our study reported that parasymphysis was the most common region involved in mandible fractures.
