Most of the practitioners do not use or have adjustable articulator to achieve a balanced occlusion for the complete denture; instead they use a free-plane/mean value articulator. Functionally Generated Path technique can be used to result in a stable denture.
Forty patients were randomly selected requiring maxillary and mandibular complete denture prosthesis. Each case was delivered with one maxillary and two mandibular complete dentures, made by two techniques i.e. one denture fabricated on free plane articulator by conventional method [Group-A] and other fabricated by utilizing FGP technique [Group-B]. Objective assessment of denture occlusion was carried out by recording contacts in eccentric positions. Patients were asked to fill a Questionnaire with a Visual Analogue Scale, comparing the Group-B denture to Group-A denture in terms of comfort, chewing efficiency and stability. Data was collected and statistically analyzed.
In Group-A, 15% cases showed positive three-point tripodal occlusal contacts in protrusion, 25% cases showed contacts in right lateral and 25% cases showed contacts in left lateral positions. In Group-B, the number of cases was 50%, 72.5% and 75% respectively.Visual Analogue Scale scores of rating Group-B denture as compared to Group-A denture showed that in terms of comfort, the average score for Group-B over Group A was +0.25, for chewing efficiency, average score was +0.50 and for stability, it was +0.60.
FGP technique for complete denture fabrication could result in more stable and efficient dentures.
