Adolescence is a critical phase marked by significant physical, psychological, and social changes. Hormonal fluctuations during puberty can disrupt oral microbial balance, leading to periodontal disease. Rising rates of alcohol and tobacco use among adolescents pose serious risks to oral health, including periodontal issues and oral cancer. Understanding adolescents' oral hygiene practices and awareness is vital for implementing effective preventive strategies.
The aim of this study is to delve into the levels of oral hygiene awareness among adolescents, their utilization of dental services, and the meticulous assessment of their daily oral hygiene routines through comprehensive questionnaires conducted in a private school setting.
A descriptive survey was conducted at L.R.S. D.A.V. School, Abohar among the targeted participants of 9th - 12th grade using an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed in paper format which included inquiries about daily brushing habits, frequency of toothbrush use, types of toothbrushes utilized, brushing techniques employed, frequency of toothbrush replacement, mouthwash usage, dental clinic visitation, awareness of dental issues, and perceived impact of oral health on general well-being.
The results showed that 41% of participants were aware of the link between oral health and overall well-being, while 59% lacked this awareness.
Based on the findings of the study, it is evident that adolescents exhibit varied oral health practices and perceptions. By fostering a culture of proactive oral care and enhancing access to preventive dental services, we can effectively empower adolescents to maintain good oral health throughout their lives.
