Abstract

Abnormal attachment of labial frenum is one of the main etiology for midline diastema. Various treatment approaches have been introduced over time, and the surgical approach has been the gold standard for abnormally attached frenum. The present study intends to compare patient's pain, wound healing, Plaque and gingival health responses to two different surgical frenectomy procedures, Conventional technique and Paralleling technique.

Thirty patients with abnormal frenal attachment were selected on the basis of inclusion & exclusion criteria. The patients were divided into two groups randomly, viz group A (Paralleling technique) & group B (Conventional technique). Preoperative protocols were done & respective surgical procedures were performed on the patients. Post-operative instructions were given and follow ups were done at regular intervals to assess the post-operative pain, healing, plaque accumulation, and gingival health respectively.

Results indicated that Paralleling technique lead to less post-operative pain, less plaque accumulation and significantly better oral hygiene maintenance after frenectomy.

Abnormal frenal attachment leads to midline diastema and hindrance in oral hygiene maintenance, Paralleling technique frenectomy causes less discomfort, better healing as well better oral hygiene maintenance post operatively.
