Accuracy of articulating paper vs intraoral scanner in occlusal contact analysis: A scoping review

Since occlusal contact analysis and evaluation is the crucial step in many dental treatments and a lack of standardized methods could introduce clinical errors, the goal of this study was to compare the accuracy of the contacts recorded using an intraoral scanner and the contacts obtained using articulating paper.

From the initial diagnosis till the prosthesis fabrication, to improve masticatory efficiency, muscle activity, and the overall functioning of the stomatognathic system, accurate recording of occlusal contacts is essential. Occlusal contact registration, both static and dynamic, is crucial for several dental specialties, including orthodontics, prosthodontics, and restorative dentistry. Despite occlusal registration's critical clinical significance, there are no reliable methods or objective standards for recording it. In this study, the accuracy of recording occlusal contacts using intraoral scanners and conventionally used articulating paper is compared.

Google Scholar and PubMed databases were being searched. Articles since 2021 were being searched. Search was being conducted for review articles and prospective studies. The English language was being chosen for the article selection.

The intraoral scanner cannot replace articulating paper in occlusal contact analysis.

Both articulating paper and intraoral scanners have certain disadvantages. But articulating paper still remains the reliable tool in occlusal contact analysis in full dentition and long-span F.P.D.
