A study of the effect of disinfectants on the dimensional accuracy of dental impression

Abstract

Impressions that have been exposed to infected saliva & blood provide a significant source for cross contamination. It is appropriate therefore, to disinfect the impression immediately after removal from the mouth.

To evaluate the disinfectant that causes least dimensional change of the impression after 10 minutes immersion.

Maxillary full arch impressions were obtained using Zinc Oxide Euginol & Alginate impression material from edentulous & dentulous master models respectively. The impressions were disinfected by 10 minutes immersion in 2%glutaraldehyde, 10%formalin & 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution and there after casts were poured by dental stone. The casts were measured by traveling microscope at various reference points & compared with the control groups.

The linear dimensions of the cast obtained from ZOE impression exhibited slight expansion of 0.0153% and 0.1515% when treated with 2% glutaraldehyde & 10% formalin respectively while 0.5% sodium hypochlorite showed a small amount of contraction of 0.1148%, yielding a smaller cast which is likely to add to the polymerization shrinkage of acrylic resin but still remained clinically insignificant. Disinfection of alginate impression with 2% glutaraldehyde the resultant stone cast exhibited linear dimensional decrease of 0.0408% while 10% formalin showed an increase of 0.1438%, which remained insignificant and not likely to cause any adverse effect on the overall success of resulting prosthesis while with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, the resultant stone cast showed a dimensional increase of 0.3265% & produced a rough surface.
