Mucormycosis: an unwanted companion of diabetes mellitus

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by the order mucorales. This is an opportunistic infection occurring in immunocompromised individuals and is becoming more frequently recognized as a secondary occurrence in Diabetes Mellitus patients, especially those with diabetic ketoacidosis. Timely diagnosis is critical to survival and minimization of morbidity. Institution of aggressive surgical and medical therapy is essential in maximizing the likelihood of a good outcome. This paper deals with a case of mucormycosis in a 38 year old female diabetic patient. The patient came with a chief complaint of pain and swelling on the left side of face and discharge through the skin over the swelling since 2 months.
