Accidental displacement of mandibular third molar into pterygomandibular space: a case report

Displacement of wisdom teeth into adjacent anatomical areas is an uncommon complication during exodontia. This paper describes the management of mandibular third molar that was accidentally displaced into pterygomandibular space during extraction. Appropriate measures taken during extraction of teeth can prevent this complication which potentially may lead to severe complications, especially if teeth are displaced into infra temporal, lingual spaces or respiratory tract. The techniques used to minimize the risk of accidental displacement of the tooth and roots during extraction are discussed. The importance of recognizing this complication and methods of retrieval are highlighted.
