Comparative clinical evaluation of conventional rotary instruments and papacarie in carious dentine removal- An in vivo study

The objective of the present study was to compare the clinical efficacy, complete caries removal time and patient acceptance of the conventional rotary instruments and chemomechanical caries removal agent papain gel (Papacarie) in children aged 6–10 yrs with at least two carious deciduous molars.

Efficacy of caries removal was measured in scores using Ericson D scale.Wong Baker Facial Pain scale compared the discomfort level experienced by the children during both procedures and time taken for complete caries removal in each procedure was calculated using stop watch. Wilcoxan Signed non parametric test was used to compare the efficacy and discomfort level.

Statistically no significant difference between the efficacy of rotary instruments and Papacarie has been found as z= 1.732, p=.083 (more than 0.05). Time taken by rotary instruments was significantly less as compared to Papacarie in caries removal Mean time taken for rotary instrument was 134+/74.399 sec and for Papacarie was 392.17+/-79.560 sec (p<.001). Pain perception by use of Papacarie was significantly less than rotary instruments (Z= 4.817, p<.001).
