Comparison of the amount of apical extrusion during manual instrumentation and engine driven rotary instrumentation in teeth with disrupted apical constriction - An in vitro study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the weight and volume of extruded debris in teeth with disrupted apical constriction by both manual and rotary instrumentation method.

50 extracted maxillary anterior teeth with mature apices were used in this study. They were divided into 2 groups- Group1 (Manual instrumentation) and Group 2 (Rotary instrumentation). They were further subdivided into subgroup 1 and 2 wherein apical patency of 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm was achieved respectively. All canals were irrigated with same amount of 2.6% Sodium Hypochlorite. A special test apparatus was prepared in which volume of extruded irrigant and weight of extruded debris was measured.

Greater amount of extruded debris and irrigant was observed in hand instrumentation technique and when size of apical constriction was increased.

Minimum enlargement of apical constriction and rotary instrumentation minimises irrigant and debris extrusion and chances of post-operative pain and flare-ups
