Amongst the bacterial species which most often cause endodontic failure, Enterococcus faecalis is the most important. This study compared the effectiveness of turmeric extract, propolis, MTAD, 3% sodium hypochlorite and 2% chlorhexidine against Enterococcus faecalis.
Antimicrobial efficacy of turmeric extract, propolis, MTAD, 3% sodium hypochlorite and 2% chlorhexidine against Enterococcus faecalis is compared by using agar diffusion method.
MTAD showed best antimicrobial efficacy followed by Chlorhexidine, Sodium hypochlorite and Propolis whereas turmeric extract showed negligible activity against Enterococcus faecalis.
Within the limitations of this study, MTAD showed stastically significant activity against Enterococcus faecalis followed by chlorhexidine, propolis and sodium hypochlorite and no significant effect of turmeric extract. Further research is needed to conclusively recommend natural remedies a root canal irrigant.
