Incision and flap design are the most important factors for the better recovery and to avoid the complications in third molar surgery. This study compares the surgical access and post operative recovery of two different incisions namely, the conventional Ward's 1 incision and the recently described comma incision.
A total of 50 patients (25 in each incision group) were taken and various parameters like quality of surgical access, pain score, swelling, mouth opening and pocket depth were compared.
Surgical access was statistically better with Comma incision. Pain was statistically less on post operative day 3 in Comma Incision Group. There was statistically highly significant difference in terms of mouth opening and pocket depth in two groups with better results in Comma incision.
Comma incision showed better surgical access, less pain, early recovery of mouth opening and better wound healing.
