Ectopic maxillary third molar in the roof of maxillary sinus - A rare case report

Eruption of tooth into a non oral environment is rare. Abnormal oral tissue that interacts during development could potentially result in ectopic tooth. The ectopic developments of tooth in non dental localization have been reported in the nasal cavity, chin, maxillary sinus, mandible, palate, and orbital cavity. Ectopic tooth eruption in the roof of maxillary sinus is usually asymptomatic and found incidentally during routine clinical and radiographic investigations. Facial pain, epistaxis, purulent discharge, headache, swelling can also be seen. Ectopic tooth within the maxillary sinus are often removed via a Caldwel- luc procedure. Thirty cases of ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus have been reported so far. An ectopic tooth in the infraorbital maxillary sinus region is a rare entity. We present a case of ectopic maxillary third molar in the roof of maxillary sinus.
