“Rhino-maxillary mucormycosis – A case report”

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection which mainly occurs in patients with immunocompromised conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, leukaemia, renal failure, lymphomas, malnutrition etc. The fungus primarily invades the blood vessels and forms thrombi which reduces the blood supply and thereby causing necrosis of the hard and soft tissues. We present a case report of rhino-maxillary mucormycosis which was associated with non healing maxillary tooth extraction sockets in a patient with known type II diabetes mellitus.The patient was managed by combined medical & surgical treatment. The outcome was favorable and no recurrence was reported in the follow up period.
