Cephalometric characteristics of class II division 1 malocclusion in a population living in the Sunam region in Punjab

To describe and analyze and compare the cephalometric dento-skeletal characteristics associated with Angle's Class II, division 1 malocclusion in a population living in Sunam region in Punjab, India.

The material examined included 20 lateral cephalograms of children(10 males and 10 females) from local schools of Sunam with Class II, division 1 malocclusion. Age range of the representing children was 7 – 13 years.

In Class II division 1 subjects, the maxilla was prognathic in relation to anterior cranial base. Upper incisors and lower incisors were proclined. The cranial base angle was not different between the two groups. Interincisal angle was significantly reduced.

In the Sunam region of Punjab, Class II division 1 malocclusion has specific characteristics. Steiner's norms are different for different populations, so patients should be treated according the norms of their ethnicity and more preferably to macro-esthetic fundamentals. Cephalometric Steiner's characteristics for skeletal class II were assessed which revealed the presence of prognathic maxilla, upper and lower dental proclination and a reduced interincisal angle.
