The primary aim of this randomized controlled clinical study was to comparatively evaluate the clinical outcome of graft associated regenerative osseous surgery in human periodontal TefGen-FD barrier membrane and HA graft, HA graft alone and open debridement only (i.e. combined versus single technique).
The present clinical study was performed on 45 sites (vertical osseous defects with probing depths ≥ 5 mm) from 20–50 years, both sexes included and divided equally and randomly into three groups. Control sites (debridement only), both test groups were grafted with porous hydroxyapatite granules and second test group also received TefGen-FD membrane. Clinical parameters included: Probing depth (PD), Relative attachment level (RAL) and Gingival margin level (GML).
At 6 months the observed RAL gains were statistically highly significant (p<0.001). The mean attachment gain using combined technique (group II membrane + bone graft) was 4.73+2.25 mm, also showed higher comparison of probing depth reduction for test group-II (membrane and bone graft) 5.67+2.22 mm) as compared to test group I (bone graft only) 4.87+1.59 mm and control group.3.33±1.59mm Changes in GML in control group were (−1.60+0.91mm), in test group I were (−0.87+0.92 mm) and test group II were (−0.93+0.88 mm). Both test groups showed statistically significant less gingival recession than control group (p<0.05).
The use of combined technique in the treatment of vertical osseous defects resulted in clinically superior results.
