Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the coronal sealing ability of 4 different restorative materials against bacterial leakage.

Sixty freshly extracted human mandibular premolars were collected and standardized access cavities were prepared. The canals were instrumented and obturated in a uniform manner. The access cavities were restored with 4 different restorative materials-Light cure composite, Glass Ionomer Cement, Glass Ionomer + Silver alloy admixed and Silver amalgam. Each tooth was placed in a test assembly, with a coronal and apical chamber. An innoculum of Proteus vulgaris was added in the coronal chamber, every five days. The lower chamber contained sterilized BHI broth. Daily observation for appearance of turbidity in the apical chamber was made for a period of 30 days.

The proportions of leaking samples were compared by either Chisquare test with Yates correction or Fisher's exact test (2-tailed) appropriately. Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVAand Mann-Whitney U-test, was used to compare the mean day of leakage for all study groups.

The frequency of bacterial penetration through the teeth restored with Glass Ionomer Cement and Glass Ionomer + Silver alloy admixed were significantly greater than those of teeth restored with Light cure composite and Silver Amalgam. However Glass Ionomer Cement and Glass Ionomer + Silver alloy admixed performed significantly better than the control group.

The quality of the coronal seal is of paramount importance in preventing leakage from root canal.
