Abstract

A Comparative Evaluation of Single Visit and Multiple Visit Root Canal Treatment in Single Rooted and Multirooted Teeth with Acute Pulpitis-an in vivo study

Hundred patients with acute pulpitis were randomly divided into two groups. Group I consisted of fifty (50) single rooted (mandibular premolar) teeth and Group II consisted of fifty (50) multi-rooted (mandibular molar) teeth. These groups were further divided into subgroups Ia, Ib and subgroups IIa, IIb respectively. Teeth in subgroups Ia and IIa were treated in single visit and teeth in subgroups Ib and IIb were treated in two visits. Root canals were prepared with Rotary protapers with Endo mate DT. Pain was recorded on the Heft Parker visual analogue scaleafter postoperative period of 12hrs, 24hrs, 48hrs, 72hrs and 1 week. Data was compiled and statistically analysed using student t test and fisher exact test.

Single visit endodontic treatment can be completed in significantly shorter time as compared to two visit treatment. Mandibular premolars treated in single visit had significantly more pain as compared to mandibular premolars treated in two visits as well as mandibular molars treated in single visit in the initial time intervals. At subsequent time intervals there was no significant difference in pain between mandibular premolars and molars treated in single visit or two visits. Post operative pain in all cases subsided with use of mild analgesics only and none of the patient required antibiotics.
