Abstract

Computed Tomography (CT) scan makes use of computerprocessed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional (Tomographic) images (virtual ‘slices’) of specific areas of a scanned object, allowing the user to see inside the object without cutting. Digital geometry processing is used to further generate a three-dimensional volume of the inside of the object from a large series of two-dimensional radiographic images taken around a single axis of rotation. Taking into account the inability of the clinical and common radio graphical methods to give accurate information about the various important anatomical landmarks in the mandible, a study was conducted to evaluate a series of CT images of mandibles from the patients to describe morphological variations in the inferior alveolar nerve canal, submandibular fossa, pattern of emergence of mental nerve and presence or absence of anterior loop.
