This in vitro study evaluated the retention and marginal leakage of provisional crowns luted with Eugenol free temporary luting cement by incorporating antimicrobial agents to Eugenol free temporary luting cement.
Hundred healthy mandibular molars were divided into four groups of twenty five specimens each. Group 1-Provisional crowns were luted with Eugenol free temporary luting cement. Group 2-Provisional crowns were luted by incorporating chlorhexidine Diacetate (NappTechnologies, N J) to eugenol free temporary luting cement. Group 3-Provisional crowns were luted by incorporating Sodium Fluoride varnish (Copal-F, Prevest Denpro) to eugenol free temporary luting cement. Group 4-Provisional crowns were luted by incorporating Amoxicillin (Warren Pharmaceuticals) to eugenol free temporary luting cement. All specimens were stored in 100% humidity at 37°C for 1 hour, thermocycled and immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin, at 37°C for 6 hours, until the retention test. Retention of crowns of each sample was tested with universal testing machine (model LR # 100, 1998, INSTRON, UK) at cross head speed of 5mm/min Depth of maximum die penetration through the margins and the axial walls was evaluated for marginal leakage.
Group 2 showed the maximum retention (79.48N) and Group 4 showed the minimum retention (33.84N). The marginal leakage was minimum (1.48) in Group 4 and Group 1 showed the maximum marginal leakage(3.08).
Retention of provisional crowns increased by incorporating Chlorhexidine Diacetate and Sodium Fluoride varnish to Freegenol but retention decreased when Amoxicillin was incorporated to Freegenol.
