To evaluate the impact of visual advertisement on tobacco cessation among patients visiting dental OPD in a private rural dental college in Punjab.
There were 90 participants each in two groups (Group A and Group B) selected on voluntary basis with a tobacco history of more than five years. WHO criteria and Pindborg's colored atlas were used for the diagnosis of oromucosal lesions. Health education regarding tobacco cessation was given at regular intervals. A brochure was also given as a part of positive reinforcement. Data at baseline and post intervention was recorded on a self structured questionnaire.
The use of tobacco was mainly found in lower class individuals and the main reason was stress (71.4%). There was a decrease in number of participants especially in Group A, yet the effect of health education intervention at regular intervals was seen.
Pictorial health warnings definitely have an impact on cessation of tobacco use. Apart from this motivational efforts and health education also play an important role in reducing the use of tobacco.
