Anatomical variation in shape and size of Sella Turcica may be evident. The size of Sella turcica may vary from person to person. The present study was conducted to determine the size and shape of sella turcica in males and females of Faridkot.
The present study was conducted in the department of Oral Medicine & Radiology. It comprised of 240 adults with age range 14–30 years. All were subjected to digital lateral cephalometric radiographs taken with Allengers machine operating at 100 kVp, 15 mA and exposure time of 9 seconds. The diameter of sella turcica, length, height at anterior, posterior and median, width and area of sella turcica (g) was calculated. The morphological variation of shapes was also assessed.
There were equal number of males (120) and females (120). The diameter of Sella turcica was found to be 10.62 mm in males and 10.57 in females, length was 8.50 mm in males and 8.48 in females, height (anterior) was 7.45 in males and 7.41 in females, height (posterior) was 7.46 mm in males and 7.44 mm in females, height (median) was 7.47 mm in males and 7.46 in females, width was 8.24 mm in males and 8.22 mm in females and area was 65.32 mm2 in males and 65.28 mm2 in females. The difference between both genders was non-significant (P> 0.05). In 40% males and 41.7% females, there was normal morphology of Sell turcica. Other variations were anterior oblique wall seen in 27.5% males and 29.1% females, bridging in 10% males and 9.1% females, double contour of floor in 6.7% males and 5% females, Irregular dorsum Sella was seen in 5.8% males and 8.3% females and pyramidal shape was observed in 10% males and 8% females.
There was non-significant difference in dimensions of Sella turcica in males and females of Faridkot. In most of the cases normal shape was found.
