Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the quality of obturation done by three different techniques (Protaper single cone, Thermafil and EndoREZ) using radiographic criteria and dye penetration method.

The radiographic quality of obturation for three different obturating systems was evaluated in both the bucco-lingual and mesio-distal views. For all the three groups the apical microleakage was also assessed by dye penetration method using scoring criteria given by WP Saunders et al. under stereomicroscope at 40X.

The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS statistical software (version 20.0). The intraobserver reliability was found to be insignificant in each of the triplicate study of all the three study groups. No significant difference was observed in terms of radiographic quality for all the three groups in both bucco-lingual and mesio-distal views. Thermafil showed minimum apical microleakage followed by Protaper single cone and EndoREZ obturating system.

In this in vitro study, we concluded that no significant difference was observed in terms of radiographic criteria. Thermafil showed minimal dye penetration followed by Protaper single cone and EndoREZ system. Thus, obturation quality of Thermafil was best followed by Protaper single cone and EndoREZ obturating systems.
