A comparison of sulfiredoxin level in patients with periodontitis and healthy subjects

Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by host-bacterial interactions. The present study was conducted to assess sulfiredoxin level in patients with periodontitis and healthy subjects.

The present study was conducted on 20 patients with chronic periodontitis. Equal number of sex matched control was also included. They were divided into 2 Groups, group I-healthy controls (n=20) and group II-patients with generalized chronic periodontitis (n=20). Sulfiredoxin level was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

The mean gingival index in group I was 0.05 and in group II was 1.21, plaque index was 0.06 in group I and 1.32 in group II, probing depth was 1.43 in group I and 4.61 in group II, CAL in group I was 0 and in group II was 4.18 mm. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). The mean sulfiredoxin level in group I was 126.5ng/ml and in group II was 172.6 ng/ml in group II. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).

Authors found high level of sulfiredoxin in patients with chronic periodontitis as compared to healthy subjects. Further studies with larger sample size are required to elucidate the role of sulfiredoxin in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
