Abstract

Immunization is one of the most effective health investments, with proven strategies that make it accessible to even the most hard to reach and vulnerable population. Immunization significantly lowers the morbidity and mortality rates in children by protecting them from vaccine preventable disease (VPDs).

To assess the immunization coverage and dropout rate of different vaccines among 0-15months of children at a selected rural area of Gharaunda, Karnal.

A non experimental research approach and descriptive survey design was used. Total 60 children under 0–15 months of age were selected by using convenience sampling technique. Checklists were used to assess the immunization coverage and dropout rate of different vaccines and the other was used to find out the reason for dropout of immunization.

The findings of the study revealed that there were 38(63.33%) males and the rest 22(36.66%) were females. 85% of the total children were fully immunized whereas 15% of children were partially immunized. The lowest coverage (83.33%) was observed for vitamin A vaccine immunization. The reasons for dropout were child sickness, mother unaware, travelling and unavailability of drug.

Immunization coverage and dropout for different vaccines existed in varying degrees among the 0–15 months children and there were many reasons for dropout (child sickness, travelling, mother unawareness and unavailability of medicine).
