Abstract

Harm from alcohol abuse can affect not only the individual who abuses alcohol, but also his or her family, the community and the entire society in which they live. Prevention efforts in the workplace, life skills training to children and adolescents, building up grass root initiatives against alcohol misuse have occurred sporadically and never as a part of a larger, well planned initiative.

To identify the effectiveness of teaching module on knowledge regarding alcohol consumption and its hazards among the adolescent boys and also to associate the knowledge gain regarding alcohol consumption and its hazards among the adolescent boys with selected socio-demographic data.

Quantitative quasi-experimental approach was used. 100 adolescent boys of 1st PUC and 2nd PUC studying at Krishna P.U. College, Hassan and aged between 12 to 18 years were selected by using Simple random technique. Socio-demographic profile and Questionnaire on knowledge of alcohol consumption and its hazards were administered to gather data.

Before intervention, adolescent boys are having below average knowledge on all aspects of alcohol consumption and its hazards. After administration of teaching module, on an average, the adolescent boys have improved their knowledge on alcohol consumption and its hazards,. The difference between pre-test mean (12.16 ± 2.26) and post-test mean (25.32 ± 1.92) knowledge score is large and it is significant. Statistical significance was calculated by using student's paired't ’test.

As the adolescents are the major population in the country and very less consideration is being given to them so it is important to carry out new nursing research studies on the problems of the adolescents.
