Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic multisystem disease related to abnormal insulin production, impaired insulin utilization or both. Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health problem affecting more than 180 million people worldwide and according to the estimate the number is expected to double by 2030. As a result of population ageing and increasing prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes accounts for most of the cases

The Aim of the study was to develop a structured valid & reliable diabetes knowledge assessment tool (DKAT).

The panelists were selected by purposive sampling technique. Total two rounds of delphi technique were used for the validation of DKAT. The final questionnaire contains 34 multiple choice questions on type 2 diabetes. The resulting instrument was tested for internal consistency & for reliability on 8 patients with type 2 diabetes selected purposively.

For the individual items the internal consistency was good i.e. cronbach's alpha >.60. The value of cronbach's alpha for overall tool is.69. The reliability by Spearman Brown Prophecy formula was 0.70. Hence the tool is reliable.
