Insurance is a tool for healthcare financing that comes in different models. These different models are in use by many countries to fund healthcare including Nigeria. Evidence shows that insurance is a useful and sustainable means for financing the structure and delivery of healthcare world-wide. In its efforts to make healthcare affordable to the populace, the federal government introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme.
This study examined the effect of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on healthcare delivery to beneficiaries in Ilorin South LGAKwara state, Nigeria.
A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study examining the effect of NHIS on healthcare delivery to beneficiaries in Ilorin South LGAK wara state, Nigeria. The research work used primary data obtained by the distribution of three hundred questionnaires (300) questionnaires to beneficiaries of NHIS in Ilorin south LGA in Kwara state, Nigeria. The instrument that was used for data collection is self-constructed questionnaire. The respondents were given 24 hours to fill the questionnaires before returning them to the researcher. Data was analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics and regression analysis.
Two hundred and ninety three questionnaires were appropriately filled and returned. From the findings of the study it was concluded that beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance Scheme have not been paying for drugs that were prescribed at the facility center even as they have not been paying for laboratory test. Also, the beneficiaries do not pay to see the specialist. With all these there has been a significant reduction in the financial burden of the beneficiaries ofhealthcare since they became enrolled in the scheme.
The same quality ofhealthcare service is given to financial member and those that pay out of pocket and the beneficiaries have access to the hospital anytime of the day. Therefore, they often visit the healthcare facility for medical care anytime they want.
