Alcoholism is one of the major health and social problem all over the world. The study on global burden of disease identified alcohol use is one of the global risk factors, accounting for 1.5% of all deaths in the world and 3.5%ofdisability adjusted life years and 4.0% of global burden of disease. Alcoholism becomes one of the major problems in our country. Its most impact is on the wives of alcoholics who are facing stress in their daily life. Alcohol causes 1.8 million deaths per year, which represent 3.2% ofall deaths worldwide.
The aim of study is to assess the stress and coping strategies among the wives of alcoholics in selected community ofdistrict, Patiala, Punjab.
An exploratory study was conducted in Gajjukhera of district, Patiala, Punjab. The study accessible population consisted of265 wives ofalcoholics. A total of 200 wives of alcoholics were selected by door-to-door survey that fulfilled defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. All wives ofalcoholics were administered with perceived stress scale for assessing the stress and Coping questionnaire for assessing coping strategies among the wives ofalcoholics.
The results revealed that out of 200 wives of alcoholics, majority (168) of wives were having moderate stress (37.94i4.2) rest ofthem was having severe (27) and mild (5) stress. Most ofthe wives of alcoholics used engaged coping (72.32%), followed by the tolerant coping (67.27%) where as the least coping strategies adopted by the wives of alcoholics was withdrawal (53.64%). The relationship between stress and coping strategies among the wives of alcoholics which showed that stress had less mean score (37.94) as compare to coping strategies (79.74).
The wives of alcoholics had moderate stress level. The engaged type of coping strategies was mostly adopted by the wives of alcoholics. There was positive relationship between stresses and coping strategies, it means wives of alcoholics had stress and used coping strategies to overcome that stress. Furthermore, socio-demographic factors were not found to be significantly related with stress. In addition, the community health nurse will explain the coping strategies to overcome the stress among wives ofalcoholics.
