Knowledge regarding occupational hazards among factory workers of spinning mills

The garment manufacturing process is a labor intensive task. The workers perform repetitive tasks throughout the workday; they face several work related problems. They are occupationally exposed to various hazardous agents. The nature of these agents and the respective exposure levels depend on the cotton industry specific sector. These exposures could be associated with respiratory symptoms, musculoskeletal symptoms, auditory symptoms and psychosocial symptoms.

To assess the knowledge regarding occupational hazards and prevention of occupational hazards among workers ofspinning mills in selected areas of Punjab.

A quantitative research approach and descriptive survey design was used to carry out present study. Aconvenient sampling technique was used to collect data from 300 workers selected as per inclusion and exclusion criteria at Jindal textile factory, Mandiala Kalan, Khanna, Ludhiana, Punj ab provided by speciality textiles limited and pushpawan Udyog a unit of Hem Knitwears Pvt. Ltd. residing in village Akbarpur Chana, Ahmedgarh, Punjab.

The findings of the study revealed that majority ofworkers i.e.58.33% of workers having inadequate knowledge and 41.66% workers having adequate knowledge regarding occupational hazards and a statistically association was found between age of worker, marital status, nature ofwork, shift ofwork, income and experience of worker.

The study shows that majority of i.e. 175 (58.33%) factory workers having inadequate knowledge and 125 (41.66%) workers having adequate knowledge regarding occupational hazards. This study has proved that the factory workers had a need to improve knowledge regarding occupational hazards.
