Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is currently the most frequently diagnosed metabolic disorder in pregnant women and is accompanied with other Comorbidities. This study assessed the maternal outcome in mother with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.
To assess the effectiveness of the “Nursing Interventional package on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus “on maternal outcomes in antenatal mothers”.
A quantitative research approach & Quasi experimental design was used where total 100 patients (50 in each experimental and control group) were enrolled by purposive sampling techniques. Alternatives days were assigned to control and experimental group. Data were collected in the period of July-September 2018. Nursing interventional package was implemented in experimental group by educating mothers regarding gestational diabetes mellitus. They were educated by one to one basis by using booklet and was also given them for references. Clinical diary was given to record their activities like walking time, blood sugar monitoring, exercise done, diabetic diet, daily fetal movement count etc. The control group was asked to follow routine care and clinical diary was also given to them to record daily activities. In both group, follow up were done at interval of four weeks till discharge.
The results of the study, it was found that Nursing Interventional Package on the management of gestational diabetes mellitus was effective in improving the adherence to regular exercise, dietary advice, keeping a record of daily blood sugar monitoring, and medicine which helped in improving maternal outcomes. Maternal outcomes were better in the experimental group as compared to the control group, though the difference was not statistically significant. It may be because antenatal mothers in both groups were registered, supervised and delivered in a tertiary care institution under the supervision of expert obstetricians, neonatologists and nurses. Hence resulted in healthy mothers and neonates. The findings of this study can be utilized by nurses while caring for antenatal mothers with GDM. This study gives evidence of the effectiveness of Nursing Interventional Package on the management of GDM. Nurse educators can make use of the findings of study and protocol while educating student nurses on the care of mothers with GDM.
Study concluded that nurses should provide education to antenatal mothers based on “Nursing Interventional Package on gestational diabetes mellitus for mothers with GDM ”to improve maternal positive outcomes of mother with GDM.
