Effectiveness of breast crawl technique on duration of third stage of labor and initiation of breastfeeding among parturient mothers

Birth practices can affect breastfeeding particularly initiation. These practices are important, in their own right, for the physical and psychological health of the mothers themselves. Early initiation offers advantages to the mother and baby, helps to keep the baby warm leads to faster and effective achievement of feeding skills by the baby. It also helps mother to have good uterine contractions and fastens expulsion of placenta, decreases maternal blood loss and prevents anemia.

The study is intended to assess the effectiveness of breast crawl technique on duration of third stage of labor and initiation of breastfeeding among parturient mothers.

A quantitative experimental study was conducted for convenient sampling technique to collect data from 60 subjects 30 in each experimental and control group selected as per exclusion and inclusion criteria at Obstetrics department of GGS medical college and hospital, Faridkot. To collect data from subjects LATCH breastfeeding tool was used for observation and structured interview was scheduled by investigator.

The results revealed that Breast crawl technique was effective in decreasing the duration of third stage of labor in experimental group. Most of the study subjects had latch score 27. Breast crawl technique was effective in initiating breastfeeding. Initiation of breastfeeding was found to be significantly associated (at p<0.05) with parity but no association could be seen between initiation of breastfeeding and sociodemographic variables. CONCLUSION: Hence it can be concluded that breast crawl technique is effective in decreasing the duration of third stage of labor and early initiation of breastfeeding.
