The sharp decline in mortality especially in the past few decades coupled with persistent high fertility levels in the large north Indian States have resulted in unprecedented growth of India's population. The levels of unwanted fertility too have been quite high in India among married women. Contraception has been the single most important intervention to reduce burden of unwanted pregnancy as well as to promote healthy living. There are bunch of misconceptions and myths regarding contraceptive devices related to knowledge of specific methods that are more limited and knowledge of sources and actual use vary widely.
The aim of study is to provide knowledge and combat the misconceptions regarding contraceptive devices among non-user married women.
A quantitative research approach was used for Co relational survey. The convenient sampling technique was used to select 200 non user married women were selected by door to door survey. The women were administered self-structured questionnaire and checklist for assessing knowledge and misconceptions regarding contraceptive devices among literate women & verbally explained to the illiterate participants. Information booklet to provide knowledge and clarify the misconceptions regarding selected contraceptive devices among the literate women & explained to illiterate participants by investigation.
It was identify that 72.2% eligible couple were non users. Majority of them had average knowledge (69.5%) and little misconceptions (50.5%) regarding selected contraceptive devices(male condom, Cu-T, Oral pills) Therefore, inverse relationship found between knowledge and misconceptions.
Contraception is important for women of all ages. But, despite of massive campaign and communication sources, there are still myths that are associated with contraception. The result of the study proved that women with poor knowledge have strong misconceptions.
