Abstract

Pregnancy and child birth are special events in women's lives. Mothers however suffer much distress after child birth due to a painful perineum following episiotomy. Episiotomy is not a pleasant experience as it is painful during and after the procedure.

The present study aim to evaluate the effectiveness of application of betadine versus chlorhexadine in episiotomy care among postnatal mothers admitted in obstetric ward of Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, RamNagar, Rajpura, Patiala.

An evaluative approach with post test only design was used for the present study. Sample consisted of 40 post natal mothers with episiotomy (20 betadine application group and 20 chlorhexadine application group), who met the inclusion & exclusion criteria. Assessment was done in terms of wound healing & intensity of pain by using REEDA scale and NRS twice daily for five consecutive days. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

There was a significant difference in wound healing (p>0.05) and intensity of pain (p>0.05) between subjects of the betadine application group and chlorhexadine application group. Hence application of chlorhexadine was more effective than that of betadine.

There was significant difference found in application of betadine and chlorhexadine i.e. chlorhexadine application was found to be significantly more effective in promoting wound healing and reducing intensity of pain as compared to betadine application episiotomy care.
