Abstract

Ensuring a safe and satisfying child birth for women require efforts of all the health care providers, particularly the intrapartum nurse. With the current emphasis on evidence based care, the labour support research is probably the most relevant research for intra partum nurses to apply to their practice.

This study is an attempt to assess the knowledge and attitude of professional nurses regarding the expectations of mothers during labour.

Descriptive research approach and non-experimental research design is used for the present study. Using purposive sampling technique, 60 professional nurses working in Ghosha Maternity Hospital, Bangaluru were selected and data was collected using structured questionnaire and attitude scale.

The findings of the study revealed that a majority of the professional nurses i.e. 60% had inadequate knowledge and 63% had moderate favourable attitude towards expectations of mothers. There is positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores.

There is also significant association of professional qualifications of the nurses, experience in labour ward, and staff development programme with knowledge and attitude of professional nurses is significantly associated with professional qualifications of nurses.
