Menopause is a common problem among women and represents a serious threat to their health and well being. The exact prevalence, however, is not known since women either don't consider them significant health problems or else reluctant to talk about them. Illiteracy, ignorance and poor social status further compound the problem, especially in socially and economically backward areas.
A community based survey was conducted to assess the health problems faced by the menopausal women in village Payal, District Ludhiana.
A total of 100 menopausal women were purposively selected. Tool consisted of checklist that was divided into the physical and psychological health problems faced by menopausal women. The study was conducted on 100 menopausal women with menopausal health problems.
59% menopausal women had moderate health problems and 41% had severe health problems. Among physical health problems 83% had moderate and 17% had severe physical health problems whereas in case of psychological health problems 46% had moderate and 54% had severe psychological health problems. The relationship of health problems was statistically tested and found significant with marital status (p<0.05), dietary pattern (p<0.05) and post menopausal period at p<0.01 level of significance.
Hence it can be said that menopausal women suffer from physical and psychosocial health problems which requires appropriate management.
