According to WHO, osteoarthritis is already one of the ten most disabling diseases in developed countries. Worldwide estimates are that 9.6% of men and 18.0% of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis. 80% of those with osteoarthritis will have limitations in movement, and 25% cannot perform their major daily activities of life.
The aim is to assess the effectiveness of exercise therapy on pain among patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Quasi-experimental approach with two group pre test and post test design was used. Through convenient sampling, 30 subjects were selected in experimental and 30 in control group. Subjects in experimental group had received exercise therapy daily for 30 days. The standardized scale VAS sleep was used to assess the level of pain. Descriptive statistics and Independent & paired t-tests and chi-square were used to analysis data.
The mean pain score of pain in pretest in experimental group was 6.40 and 2.58 in post test. The mean pain score of pain in pretest in control group was 6.40 and 4.05 in post test. As per independent t test, there was significant difference (t value 4.157 and p value 0.000) between both groups with regard to pain level at p value <0.05.
It can be concluded that exercise therapy is non invasive, non pharmaceutical and effective method to reduce knee pain in experimental group among patients with knee osteoarthritis.
