Knowledge and utilization of services of janani suraksha yojana among the women of reproductive age group (18–45 year)

The pregnancy and childbirth has been contributed to have a great impact on both maternal and infant health. To reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates by promoting institutional deliveries, Janani Suraksha Yojana is proposed on April 12, 2005 under the National Rural Health Mission by the central government.

The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and utilization of services of Janani Suraksha Yojana among the women of reproductive age group (18–45 year) in selected rural and urban areas of District Faridkot, Punjab.

Through convenience sampling 500 (250 from rural area and 250 from urban area) reproductive age group women were selected and self structured questionnaire was used for collection of data.

The majority of women i.e. 50.8% had average knowledge, 36.8% women had poor knowledge and 12.4% women had good knowledge regarding Janani Suraksha Yojana. 60.4% women had utilized the services of JSY and rest i.e. 39.6% had not utilized the services. The most common reason for non-utilization of services of JSY was more confidence in private hospital i.e. 40.39% and least was lack of awareness regarding JSY i.e. 1.33%.

The findings of the study revealed that majority of women have average knowledge regarding JSY and majority of women had not utilized the services of JSY. There was a statistically significant association between the knowledge and utilization of services of JSY with education at p<0.05 levels.
