The antibacterial and antifungal activity of methanolic and hexane extracts of the leaves of four Datura sp. viz.D.ferox,D.metal, D.inoxia and D.stramonium was investigated against five pathogenic bacteria viz.Bacillus subtilis(NCIM2699), Escherichia coli(NCIM 2803), Proteus vulgaris(NCIM 2027), Staphylococcus aureus(NCIM 2602) and Salmonella typhimurium(NCIM 2501)and four fungi Aspergillus flavus(NCIM 525), A.niger, Candida albicans(NCIM3100) and Rhizopus stolonifer. The results indicated that the extent of inhibition depends largely on the plant part and the solvent used for extraction, and the nature of organism tested. The methanolic extract of D. ferox and D.stramonium was found effective against E.coli, while S.aureus was sensitive to the methanolic extract of D.inoxia. Among the fungi tested Candida albicans was found sensitive to leaf extract of D.inoxia prepared in hexane.
