Abstract

Present investigation was carried out to increase total grain protein content (GPC) in rice using two diverse parents viz., BPT 5204 (fine grain with low protein) and HPR 14 (bold grain with high protein). In F3 generation, protein content ranged from 7.10 to 18.06 percent, however it was decreased in F4generation within the range of 8.15 to 12.92%. The wide range indicated that the alleles were segregating for this trait under consideration and stabilizing it in F4generation. The other quality traits (grain length, grain width, grain length to breadth ratio, kernel length, kernel breadth, and kernel length to breadth ratio), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper and iron), yield and yield attributing characters(days to flowering, days to maturity, biomass, number of tillers, number of panicles, panicle length, seed fertility percentage, grain yield, test weight and harvest index) also recorded similartrend as in case of grain protein content (GPC).
